Kentucky Derby

The Saturday before last, the world-renowned Kentucky Derby took place, with Medina Spirit, a 3-year-old thoroughbred, winning. In a post-race drug test, Medina Spirit failed to pass,  leading to allegations against the horse and its trainers, one of whom is the Hall of Fame winner Bob Baffert.

Drug testers found an unacceptable amount of the steroid betamethasone in Medina Spirit’s system. Bob Baffert acknowledged that this substance could have possibly come from his use of betamethasone cream on the winning horse. Despite her failed drug test Medina Spirit is being allowed to compete in the upcoming Preakness Stakes race, an American thoroughbred race that follows the derby.
